ABOUT FUTO CENTERS

  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

It applies to all communications-related devices and software, such as computers, mobile phones, televisions, radio and satellite networks, as well as various related facilities and applications, such as video conferencing and distance learning.

The FUTO Centre for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) was set up in 1996 during the tenure of Engr. Prof. C.O.G. Obah, the university’s third substantive Vice-Chancellor.

ICT operations therefore began with the creation of a Coordinating Panel of the Nigerian Universities Network (NUNET) to provide the University Community with e-mail services from an office in the Vice Chancellor’s chamber.

The e-mail service was supplied by linking the dial-up service of the National Universities Commission to the International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Italy. An alternative and complete Internet connectivity that does not rely on a telephone line was introduced via Connection Service Ltd due to the latency associated with this form of communication. The University Community supplied URLs for searching and downloading with such enhanced access.

Additional relief was provided by a Philanthropist’s contribution to the Internet Centre for Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2004, which was expanded to the NUNET office at the Permanent University Site. The need to harmonize and organize the university’s numerous ICT units resulted in the formation of the ICT Directorate by the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Jude E. Njoku, in January 2005.
